Slowly Closing The Valve

Last summer was spent with the outside water spigot wide open. It had to be. There was no choice. The water needed to flow like the tears of that January if I was to expect any kind of healing. I had to drink hard and ride harder. My Wednesday night mountain bike friends group ride suffered sitting on my wheel. I did not follow, I lead. I rode hundreds of road miles alone and when I did ride in my annual group century I pushed the pace to a 22 plus average. Anyone who spent anytime with me would feel my pain and not know why.
I withdrew to just a very few close friends who knew. The rest have been written off and still are.
This summer brings a new challenge, a harsh reality of a trial that will judge someone and ultimately choose to kill him in my name. I do not agree and there is no stopping it, there are too many others who's valves need to flow. I will close mine down to a more manageable stream. I want to focus on a plan, the escape route to the west. The vision quest I've wanted to go on for forty years has come at the time when it is supposed to. I have no religion, believe in no god yet know where I need to go and for what reason. For me.

Exceeding the human ability to make positive progress and policies in societal development or support it as a whole. Benefiting only the controlling few will ultimately lead to the human demise.

Increasing denigration of race, more designation of infrastructure then a beginning of a die off. Not total but certainly significant enough to set human existence back several centuries.

One main cause will be an exploding population and an inability to feed it or control its movement across continents.

Governments will be forced not to defend its populations but rather it's food stores, nuclear weapons and energy stations from it's populations while positions of power change until ultimately a detonation occurs and a meltdown poisons the landscape for hundreds of square miles.

All the while the devoted and faithful stay on their knees praying for a deliverance that will never come.

How else is a lady gonna find a new husband after the bomb belt goes off?

drug testing will be done so bring enough for everyone.
the blood threshold level must have trace amounts of alcohol or sanctions will be levied
this is not a race, there is no recognition for first place although there will be a LOT of recognition for last place.
there are 3 neutral zones; at the beginning of the ride in the middle of the ride and the last half of the ride.

So it's all set, I figured out a route that should keep us from having to dismount our bikes. Unless you need to run for some reason. About that (reason) I think we might actually have 2 lawyers on hand in case something goes south and since we will be in South-Side Richmond for part of the ride that could come in quite handy. Also word has it an MD could make the ride but it's his night off and he don't make house calls. So that and the fact our "council" might be drunk you're basically on your own which means; bring bail money along with your insurance card and show up Friday April 1st, ride starts at 8:15 from under the south end of the Huguenot Bridge. Starts on Valentines day and ends on April 1st (From Lovers to Fools) To break Lent on April 1st I'm having a Secret Bike Ride leaving from and ending at my house. Followed with a ring of fire, meat on the grill and beer/wine. The ride starts at dusk (when ever that is) so you don't need to skip school or work or what ever it is that you do on Fridays.
I must warn you, the bike ride is slightly dangerous and involves a small amount of trespassing. It'll be an urban night ride where at one point it would be best not to have lights and ride fast. So a cross bike or sturdy road bike would be best but a MTB will be fine too. Ride is about 2 hrs then fire and booze. What could possibly go wrong?
But you don't have to ride to attend. However bring your thick skin because you will be ridiculed and your hand slapped with a ruler.
Can't break Lent without a little suffering.

The dog days of summer have come early this year to Richmond. This town is known for its heat but mostly the river that runs in the middle of everything brings humidity that makes being out side like being inside...a terrarium. I made one out of a giant pickle jar when I was a kid and had a jungle growing in it. Now my back yard is just like it only no beautiful ferns instead mostly poison ivy. It's being handled though.

Fifty bucks each and they don't mind the heat. They've already put a big dent in the 3/4's of an acre of over grown property we own. But they're here illegally. No papers or work documents. but for a period of time coinciding with Lent. It just seems like a good time to do this. I've been going through a shit storm of in's and out's, up's and down's, with family and friends. I did the big blow out of drinking a few days after the loss where at one point I found myself at 3am having a meaningful conversation with no one else in the room. Believe me it was healthy and part of the process for me. I've also met with my doctor so we could plan a recovery from a cycling injury that had me baffled. I've started running again along with strength training; something I loved to do in the past but set aside to ride for almost 10 years. I coming out of this strong, stronger, strongest and with a plan and a purpose.

This, at this time, seems right. Lent starts at midnight Wednesday so tomorrow I'm heading over to my buddy's house. We've know each other for over 15 years, we talked tonight and he invited me...almost challenged me, to have a few drinks then hang it up for 40 days. Yep, that's perfect timing, something to help me focus even more.

But until 12am Wednesday...I'm going to show my tits then after I'm going for the Catholic trifecta...no booze, red meat or sodomy until some time in April. Two of the three should be no problem.

1980's Punk scene wasn't like anything ever seen before. It had been almost 20 years since Rock music took the stage and had gone from revolutionary to melodic, poetic and pathetic. It had become a watered down mind numbing commercialised Pop radio soup fed to listeners in between commercials that were as repetitive in their rotation as the music itself. Disco had also reared it's ugly head and the polyester jumpsuit wearing slick dicks were lining up at the local dance clubs to Hustle the night away.
Then out of no where, or England, came a new revolution of pissed off go fuck yourself mayhem music. It was basic, loud for no reason other than to just be loud and a battle ground where the war against mediocrity was being fought.
As with any fight worth fighting casualties were taken, friends and loved ones lost. Ground was gained given back and won again only to have succumbed to the temptations of commercial success another 20 year later.
Where will the new line in the sand be drawn?

I have always been at odds with this month. My birthday is in January but not being a cold weather fan and it being the beginning of Winter's depth I find myself less active and waiting for time to pass. But this January has been a month of unimaginable tragedy and enlightenment.

The loss of my brother, sister in law and niece reduced my life to it's basic need. To find comfort in family and friends, to work through pain and sorrow, to rebuild who I am, find what is truly important and to never let time just pass.

The enlightenment I have found can only be described as an Energy Epiphany where I felt the strength of my Brother Jon and learned what to focus on.

The easiest way to explain this is to say that I did not find god but found the power that is in us all, a collective energy that connects every living thing. Don't worry though, I'm not running off to join a cult because this feeling is an individual awakening and can only be realized by looking deep within yourself and how you relate to this existence.

Something else I've come to realize is that there are cowards that live among us and will occasionally cross paths with the righteous and being the dregs of society that they are will not leave us out of their lives but instead include us in the misery they have created for themselves. The one that has crossed my family's path will now have to deal with the consequence of his actions. But our family is strong and our resolve to come out of this has made us stronger. We are a family with many friends that will help us deal with this psychopath. He has taken something dear from us and I am prepared to take everything away from him. It will not be swift but it will be total.

Now life is slowly returning to what it should be and will once again be filled with the happiness I get from it. Soon Spring will warm the earth and the rebirth of my soul will be complete, Life truly springs eternal.

Got in upstairs to the party and not knowing anyone it was a bit awkward what with there not being any booze or a kraft services table. typical scene with mostly friends of the band, hangers on (me) a few girls and several beautiful women. It quickly became boring and I started shooting pool on the empty table. Just randomly spread the balls around and after a few misses I dropped 6 balls and was actually on my way to running the table. I don't shoot pool...ever, but for some reason I was hot. I was lining up for the next ball each time and working it like a pro. As I was about to drop the seventh ball a beautiful British woman of African descent approached wanting to cut in and "have a go."
Alright...1) No alcohol so my powers of charm against her were weakened and 2) I was about to run the table and she totally iced me. At first I thought she was trying to hustle me because she saw me drop 6 balls in a row. I even asked her if she was going to pull a Paul Newman on me but it became obvious quickly that she had know idea what I was talking about. Then when I said she had just 'iced' me she looked at me like when you whistle at a puppy and they turn their head from side to side. So I said "like during a football game and the other team calls a time out just as the kicker is trying for a field goal." As soon as it came out of my mouth I knew that was lost in translation so I said "how about I keep shooting until I miss then it's your turn" and bet her a dollar I'd make the next shot. She agreed, I missed and it got ugly from there.
She was not really interested in shooting pool and I don't know if I was being hit on but I painfully missed shot after shot finally scratching on the last ball. She asked me mine and told me her name but I will only remember her as the girl that shut down my 12 ball run and had the nerve to collect the dollar.

What’s Wrong With Me

Three weeks ago it started with aches and pains, congestion, sneezing, coughing, typical cold coming on. It happens every year at least once and this time it went on for 10 days. Depending on the work load I usually work right through being sick but the project I’m on is physically demanding and the virus had killed all my energy and I thought it was possibly the Swine Flu but no fever. Then last Sunday I felt fine, work all last week and by Friday felt sick again and with a half day of work scheduled for Saturday I was getting tired of being sick and tired. I sucked it up did the work then went to Patient First on the way home to see a Doc in the Box.
Now the reason for this post; I walked in handed them my insurance card and walked out an hour later having had blood work done, a flu test, met with a doctor who handed me the results of the tests along with a prescription that was filled there all for 10 bucks.
What hell would I have to pay if I was uninsured? How long would I have to work to pay for this not to mention all the other medical attention I get?
Here’s a rundown on what’s wrong with me: Food allergies as a child, asthma for 40 years 4 different drugs every day for that, Pneumonia 4 times over my lifetime, 2 allergy shots twice a month, 3 hernia surgeries over 30 years due to my work, cancer in 1990, back surgery in 2007 and all I had to do was walk in and deal with being sick and not whether I’d be turned away and left to die because I was uninsured.
How could I not want everyone to have this kind of access to medical treatment?
What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with affordable insurance for all?

I was home sick and watched a couple war movies, saw the President walk through Arlington and thought about calling my dad. (Pictured receiving a Purple Heart after Iwo Jima) But he wouldn’t have cared about the significance of the call just that I called, so I waited a couple of days.
I’ve been so back and forth on war, as a kid I played it with my friends, have an interest in WWII history and selfishly want to hear more about my dads experience during that time even though I know it pains him to talk about it which is why he rarely does. I supported Desert Storm and lost a couple friends because of that and got fooled into supporting that idiot “W” and his puppet master Chaney’s “war on terror’ when we went to Iraqi. But even then I thought it better to use our military resources to lock down the castle, meaning tighten security at home in the US while probing and surgically removing the terrorist threat.
Recently I’ve not become passive because I like seeing fundamentalist get their ass kicked no matter the ideology, but more anti “taking the fight to them.” And not just being in Iraq or Afghanistan but having our military in Japan, Germany and scattered all over Europe and Asia. Have we become Rome though not in the same vein but still spread thin and spending vast amounts of resources let alone cash to keep the Soviet Union from rolling into Europe all Stalin Style?
Could we not evolve our military into peace keepers by bringing the majority home to aid with the reconstruction of the US infrastructure?
I think maybe that would be a great way to thank those who serve.

Soon all the children will put on their best new clothes, shove brown bag lunches into backpacks along with books, pens, pencils and dreams of what lies ahead for them in the next 9 months.
I remember those days but more as a forced march to the drum of disinterest that left me waiting for a piece of paper that my parents felt was the only gauge of success. All the while I was doing the very least to obtain it for them. Once freed from the shackles of desks and used books that didn’t contain the answers to my questions, I began my real education by taking the long way around to get here which is by no means where it will end. What I found along the way is that mediocrity must be avoided at all costs, satisfaction leads to complacency, hard work keeps you thin, hard play keeps you healthy and alive and don’t let youth be wasted on the young.

Mine? Just fine, but I have noticed as the dog daze of August linger I’m feeling spent. My youthful enthusiasm is at odds with my only tolerably adequate energy level. I need a break from something, either work or riding. If I cut back on the latter I’m concerned that my fitness will diminish but my work is most important to me so it looks like I’m taking some time off the bike. Right after this weekends race then the trip to Durango and of course once the Fall riding season ends, cause that’s the best time of year around here, can’t miss that. I’m thinking late December will be perfect.

What the hell was I thinking!? Going into the woods 2nd after the sprint start on the road felt fine but I hate having all those guys behind me. I held my position for the 1st lap but then guys that had been sitting in started picking me off; bastards….beat me at my own game. Next race, Fountain Head, with lots of technical climbing and fun down hills. Game on!

Either way I’m over it. Monday had me exhausted from all the preparation for the up coming race series http://www.ex2adventures.com/cranky-monkey.php so much that I over trained and had to rest for 3 days the first of this week. That’s not as easy as it would be if I was a pencil pushing, paper shuffling desk jockey. But instead I had a floor to install for ‘The Peahen’ in his new condo. Fortunately he’s in France leading a couple bike tours through the Pyrenees and Alps so no rush or pressure to get it done other than self inflicted. I’ve got a schedule of sorts but plenty of time to recover in time for my race Sunday and finishing the install. End result will be fantastic on both fronts…the 12x12 slate is beautiful and I will be kicking some old man ass in Wakefield.

The start of my ride at the top of Afton Mountain with a descent to Waynesboro was windy and cold but I knew that the valley would be warmer and calm for my ride toward the climb of Vesuvius. The 3 miles up the climb took 30 minutes and had me drenched in sweat as I entered the Parkway on a windy up hill but it dried me off quickly as I rode the white aggregate surface. The Parkway always rewards each climb with smooth, fast downhill’s and sweeping turns that require no breaking, if you have the handling skills and nerve, let it eat!

This is an interior arts project collaboration between Julie and me in our home where we went all stimulus package at the local contemporary furniture store, picked up a ridiculously cool wall system from Seattle and bought art from someone that I simultaneously would love to hang out with but would be reluctant to let near my home.

In an over whelming colonial southern town, http://www.ladiff.com/ is an oasis of fresh furnishings ideas.

Sometimes I’ll see something and know instantly that I’ll be putting it in my home and http://www.modulararts.com/ is a fine example of what I mean.

Steve Smith of http://www.drunkingham.com/ makes art that doesn’t speak to me it yells, usually something obscene but if you lived in my head then you’d understand. Once the pieces arrive they’ll be installed very strategically; you’ll enter into the living room, mesmerized by the carful execution of space planning, placement and color. Then you’ll begin to move through the room taking in the craftsmanship while drawn to each wall and the art that adorns them, finally arriving behind where you began and seeing 2 in the series of Steve Smith’s ‘The Town’ and realizing it’s too late to run.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a good piece of urban art in Richmond and I hope there’s more to come.
This is on a piling of the Lee Bridge and can be seen from the suspension bridge that hangs from the underside of the Lee Bridge which is used by pedestrians and mountain bikers to reach Bell Island. The island has a fun section of single track on its hill top and a gravel road around its base circumference. Bell Island is also known as ‘Titty Island’ due to all the young ladies that sun on the rocks of the rapids. Needless to say there’s a lot to see around here. Get here if you can…

I’ve been ignoring this here blog due to a couple of things. First of which is that my laptop checked out and I’ve been using Julies work computer when she brings it home. Not a good enough excuse in itself but it doesn’t have a camera card insert thingy to download pictures and I need visuals to inspire me to write so I bought the necessary hardwear and soon more unsavory images will appear here. But the big source of this uninspired period is Facebook; it has stolen a little of my soul while at the same time filled in many missing pieced of my past. Just like everyone else on the planet I’ve reconnected with people that were a big part of my youth and whether they wanted to see my Face or not I’ve put it in front of them. I’ve also given them the opportunity to see my ass which I’m sure most would say is what they thought of me when they knew me 20+ years ago. One friend in particular has surface that is holding a certain picture of me that I had lost decades ago and has promised to scan it and send to me. When that little piece of history arrives many questions about why I am who I am will become clear.

I’ve been working like a $2 whore on quarter night and just as sore so I’m taking the rest of the week off and abusing myself in a different way. 12noon ride with ‘the peahen’ then Saturday helping a new friend with his bike build at the ‘bike shed.' On Sunday after brunch in the gazebo I’ll head to Cville and build that tree house for the grand niece and then hit the trails with her dad the nephew. But I’ll be back in the salt mines on Monday to grout the floor I just tiled and fix a leaky toilet then a few days at the beach, but now I’m just bragging.

How do people in Seattle and Portland deal with all the rain they get? One day of not playing outside and I’m ready to slit my wrists. But it’s close to spring and we all know what that means…two weeks of glorious weather then the Richmond summer of 95 degrees, although I rather like it hot and humid as compared to cold …and humid. It’s hard to drink frozen margaritas when it’s frozen. I think this year I’ll keep a blender in the Gazebo full time.

Spring sprang with temps in the 70’s right after winter dusted us off here in the southland. Then the time changed (which is my favorite time of the year) and I’ve been up at what used to be 5am a few days ago.
But the time deference isn’t making me motivated to bound out of bed, it’s the projects I’ve got going that’s capturing my interest and one project more that the others.
Julie and I have been spending some quality time together, sharing our common bond in creativity and redesigning a less used space in our home. The living room of our house has been used mostly as a big entrance hall that displays much of our art but doesn’t serve well to entertain in due to its layout and lack of social seating, Julie fixed that with a new floor plan and some furniture purchases.
My job in this, along with aesthetic input and limited (emphasis on limited) veto power is to install the sculpture wall to accent one of our most love paintings by friend Andres Bality.
The design is from Modular Arts and is an architectural wall element that is repeating pattern panels which once installed create a seamless wall sculpture. But to install the wall I’ve got to build a wall, the sculpture weighs 460lbs and needs to have a flat stable surface for the install.

The power most always goes off anytime the weather turns nasty or amorous squirrels get a little too close to a transformer. So first on the list is propane for the portable gas heater then closely followed by a 12 pack of the High Life. Chips and salsa are a given but the almond M&M’s make it truly a holiday and go so well with multiple episodes of “What Not to Wear.”
